New York Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks fractured the fifth metatarsal in his right foot, and will be sidelined for at least 12 weeks.
Nicks, out of the University of North Carolina, and entering his fourth season in the league, suffered the injury while running a route at Thursday’s organized team activity at the Timex Performance Center in East Rutherford, N.J. He will undergo surgery Friday in Charlotte, N.C.
The 6’1″ Nicks caught 76 passes for 1,192 yards and six touchdowns for the Super Bowl champion Giants in 2011, and excelled in the playoffs, catching 28 balls for 444 yards and four touchdowns, including two apiece versus the Falcons and the Packers. Against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 46, Nicks caught 10 passes for 109 yards.
This is the second foot fracture Nicks has suffered to date; he missed the final four games of 2010 with a break in his left foot.
Cornerback Prince Amukamara, the team’s 2011 first-round pick from Nebraska, suffered the same injury in training camp on August 6th and did not appear in a game until November 20th, 15 weeks later. The Giants’ 2012 opener against Dallas is scheduled for Wednesday, September 5th, just 15 weeks away.
What’s your guess — will Nicks be out there?
