I love New York nights like Friday… Dinner with good friends, then, saying goodbyes outside the restaurant, a woman grabbed me and said how much she loves me….not my wife mind you….but a woman who just came out of the same restaurant. In her Italian accented English, she said she wonders why I cry on TV every night. Her husband concurred, and said, “she does love your show,” but cautioned her that I would cry if she didn’t leave me alone!
What!? I’ve no idea who she thought I was, but since she didn’t let me get a word in anyway, I just played along…
Walking on Second Avenue; the bars were packed. Why? It’s Friday night, AND, Jeremy Lin and the Knicks were on TV. Yes, on TV in Manhattan. Finally! Earlier today MSG Network and Time Warner Cable came to their senses, realizing that they have a golden goose in the Lin led Knicks, and there’s too much money out there to fritter away. It’s cool to root for the Knicks again, as showcased by standing room only crowds in every bar, and the not-a-table-available in other establishments showcasing the game on multiple TVs. In stark contrast, the NY Rangers are walking away with their division in the NHL and aren’t even a topic of conversation…
A few blocks later on our two-mile-walk home, walking towards us, we saw comedian, Mario Cantone. He’s the ridiculously hilarious comic and actor who was a regular on “Sex and the City” and is a periodic guest on “The View.” We talked for a minute or two – he says he’s not a sports follower, but what a nice and gracious guy… Love his work…
Continuing the walk past nabes getting ruined by the digging of the Second Avenue subway, we stopped every few bars to peer in and monitor the progress of the game. The bars started emptying out at 10:45. Sad faces. Uh-oh, Linsanity didn’t reign tonight. Good bye seven-game win streak. The kid did score 26-points though, in an 89-85 loss to the lowly New Orleans Hornets.
Uneventful the rest of the way home. Although I still wonder why the heck young women wear six-inch spiked platform heels. As my uncle always said, “Those chicks don’t have a chance if they have to break into a run.” As my wife replies when I (always) point this out, “they have enough trouble breaking into a walk” …
Sights to see. A New York frame of mind…
